Assessor's Office

The 2020 Real Property Notices of Value have been sent. If you received a notice you have the right to protest your value.

Due to the pandemic, the Assessor's office will not be taking in person protests at this time. Please call (970)382-6221 or protest online here. You can also submit your protest by mail or drop it in the drop box in our building's parking lot. Our address is 679 Turner DR, STE A, Durango, CO, 81303. The deadline for submitting a protest is June 1, 2020.

Memo from the Assessor:

Greetings fellow property owners, below you will see 2 links regarding changes to filing deadlines for Personal Property Declarations. Please note at this time there has not been legislation to suspend tax payments, although tax penalties have been waived (please see the La Plata County Treasurer for more information on tax payments).

Also please note that for now the staff of the Assessor’s Office are all working remotely. We are available via phone, email and will be getting our US Mail on a regular basis. We take this action to protect ourselves, our families and the public from unnecessary personal contact. You may see our field vehicle out taking photos, but with no contact with the public. We are completing all of the task required of the Assessor by State statute, and are available Monday thru Friday from 8 to 5.

Thank you and please be safe!

Governor Polis' Order for Filing Extensions

Memo from the Department of Property Taxation

Filing Instructions

The County Assessor is responsible for valuing all real and personal property, including mobile homes, residential, commercial properties, oil and gas, and agricultural land for property tax purposes. The Assessor determines the equitable value of property to ensure that each tax payer pays only his or her fair share of the taxes.  The Assessor strives to ensure property ownership and land configurations are current, correct and that the proper person receives Notices of Value and the property tax bill.

Anyone who disagrees with changes in the actual value of real property can object or file a protest with the Assessor.

Warning: The La Plata County Assessor’s Office maintains a bedroom count exclusively for its own ad valorem valuation purposes and this bedroom count should not be relied on for any other purpose.  Similarly, other property inventory data collected and maintained by the La Plata County Assessor’s Office is exclusively for its own ad valorem classification and valuation purposes and should be independently verified for reliability prior to use for any other purpose.
