Hazard Mitigation Plan

Public Invited Review La Plata County Hazard Mitigation Plan

(La Plata County, CO)- The La Plata County Fire Chief’s Association and The La Plata County Office of Emergency Management have developed a County-wide All Hazard Mitigation Plan (AHMP).  The plan is available for review at the Durango Public Library, the Bayfield Public Library, Durango Fire and Rescue Fire Station 1 (142 Sheppard Drive, Durango) and the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District’s Administration Building (515 Sower Drive, Bayfield).  The Draft AHMP is available online here.

Since January of 2012, the La Plata County Fire Chief’s and The La Plata County Office of Emergency Management have been working to develop the AHMP.  The development committee had representative from Durango Fire and Rescue Authority, Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District, Los Pinos Fire Protection District, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District and the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management.  The AHMP identifies and profiles the natural and human-caused hazards to which the County is vulnerable, assesses the vulnerability of the more significant hazards (e.g. flood, severe weather and wildfire), and includes goals and actions intended to mitigate the effects of these hazards.

The plan is also developed to allow La Plata County and its participating jurisdictions to be eligible for certain disaster assistance, specifically, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Program, as well as earning credits for the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System.  This hazard mitigation plan documents the multi-jurisdictional, multi-hazard mitigation process, which is intended to meet the requirements of the Federal Disaster Act of 2000.
